Miguel Cabrera Biography

Born Jose Miguel Torres Cabrera in April 17, 1983, the one-time shortstop for the Florida Marlins has been blessed with a life that is undeniably meant for greatness in the Professional Baseball League.

Little Jose’s parents, Miguel and Gregoria Cabrera initially met on a baseball diamond, having been excellent players themselves during their time. Little Jose’s father was originally an acclaimed amateur baseball player who had unfulfilled dreams about going pro, while his mother was a shortstop for the Venezuelan national softball team, and is sister to David Torres, who signed with the Cardinals and made it to Class AA before his career lost steam.

Even as a young child, Miguel Cabrera was already a baseball toddler, spending most of his formative years at the dugout at his mother’s games or playing in the background with his father and uncle. Additionally, all he needed to do at the time to watch a game was climb over the fence, which separated his backyard from the right field line of Maracay Stadium.

It was at the age of 14 when Miguel decided to pursue a pro career in baseball, and got approval and financial support from his parents as long as his schoolwork was not affected. At this point, the Yankees and the Dodgers were already scouting Miguel, but his favorite team was the Florida Marlins, and his dreams came true when after a tryout for the Marlins, he was offered a $1.8 million dollar contract, which he had to wait until his 16th birthday to sign. He signed the contract in July of 1999, and the rest is sports history.
